Brown, Lately

Lately I have been reaching for brown in almost everything. It started with a coat, then a bag, then I noticed the whole wardrobe moving in the same direction. There is something grounding about it, warm without being loud, classic without feeling heavy.

Why Brown

For most of my life, black has been my answer to elegance. I never really questioned it. Black coats, black leather jackets, at some point I owned three of them at once, black as the default whenever I wanted to look put together. It felt safe, timeless, and certain.

Then I started to get tired of it.

I wasn't looking to reinvent my wardrobe, just to find something that felt different but equally elegant. A substitute that didn't compromise on that quiet, understated quality black has always had for me. I found it, almost accidentally, in brown.

Brown dominated the fall 2025 fashion moment, runways, street style, social media (and it still is in some ways) and I tend to resist trends instinctively. I prefer building a wardrobe that feels personal rather than seasonal. But something about this particular trend felt less like a moment and more like a rediscovery. It started with a brown fur coat for winter, then boots, then a bag, then a full winter set. Now I find myself actively seeking out more, deeper chocolates, warm caramels, earthy tones I never considered before.

What surprised me most was realizing how elegant brown actually is. It carries the same versatility as black, the ability to anchor an outfit, to work across seasons and occasions, but without the severity. There is a warmth to it that black doesn't have, a softness that feels more approachable without being any less refined. A brown coat reads differently than a black one. It feels more considered, quieter, somehow more personal.

Brown also pairs beautifully with red, which has always been my favourite colour. I love a red bag or accessory, and brown provides exactly the right grounding for it, warm enough to complement, neutral enough not to compete. It has worked with everything I have tried it with so far, maintaining that subtle chicness I have come to love about it.

What I didn't immediately realise is how deeply brown is rooted in Milanese fashion, the city where my sense of style was first shaped. Brown, from rich chocolate to mocha and terracotta, has long been a staple of Milan street style, particularly in autumn, appearing in suede, wool, and leather in ways that feel entirely natural rather than trend-driven. It even appeared prominently at Milan Design Week 2025, carrying through from fashion into furniture, textiles, and interiors. In Milan, brown isn't a trend. It's part of the vocabulary.

Perhaps that's why it felt so right when I finally noticed it. Not a departure from what I love, but a return to something I already understood without knowing it.
