Winter in the Mountains

Winter outfits from a weekend in Truckee and Lake Tahoe, with snow still lingering in the background.

Winter in the mountains has always felt especially chic to me. There’s something about mountain settings that naturally shapes the way I dress, where comfort is essential, but style still matters. Cold weather creates space for more thoughtful outfits, built around layering, texture, and pieces that feel both practical and refined.

I’m particularly drawn to simple, cozy sets when I’m in the mountains. A soft turtleneck paired with comfy, tailored pants is one of my favorite combinations for snowy days and skiing weekends. It’s warm without feeling bulky, easy to move in, and still looks clean and put together. These kinds of outfits feel effortless, but intentional, perfect for transitioning from time outdoors to sitting inside a lodge or walking through town.

Outerwear becomes the key element in these settings. Oversized coats, strong jackets, fur textures, and structured silhouettes anchor the look while keeping everything functional. I love how fur hats, big coats, and neutral layers feel completely at home against snow, trees, and mountain landscapes. Colors like black, white, brown, and soft neutrals keep things grounded and allow the materials to stand out.

What I appreciate most about winter dressing in the mountains is the balance it allows. Sporty and chic don’t feel like opposites here and they naturally coexist. Technical boots and warm layers are paired with clean lines, soft knits, and well-chosen accessories. Everything serves a purpose, but nothing feels overly technical or styled for show.

For me, mountain winter style isn’t about dressing up or following trends. It’s about dressing well for the environment, comfortable, warm, and quietly polished. Cozy pieces like turtlenecks and relaxed pants become the foundation, while outerwear and textures elevate the look. It’s an approach to fashion that feels calm, considered, and deeply connected to the setting itself.
